Traceability and kinship tests

Research line: Impact

Description of impact

The kinship of animals, in other words, their paternity, filiation, etc. may be determined by means of the analysis of the differences in 'DNA microsatellite'-type genetic markers. This is why it is necessary to determine the number and type of microsatellite markers used and to extend these markers by PCR. Remembering that every individual has a given number of repetitions of every microsatellite, if we know the microsatellite profile of one or both progenitors then we can determine paternity. Reproductive and food traceability is also fundamental for the identification of the origin of the animal to guarantee the genealogy of the animals in genetic screening programmes and for the identification of species to avoid food frauds.
