Effects of physical dynamics on the water quality and ecology of natural systems.

Research line: Impact

Description of impact

In this research line we study the spatial and temporal variability of the distributions of in situ sediment and plankton particles associated to the mixing in water systems: lakes and wetlands. It includes the dynamics of sediment laden convective chimneys in a lake, the shadowing and sheltering effects of submerged and emergent plants in wetlands, and the algal dynamics associated to mixing. These processes are also simulated in laboratory experiments. We also study the effect of plants in the attenuation of waves. We also study the biological filtration of waste water in a waste water treatment plant in collaboration with Costa Brava consortium.
