Genetics of exploited marin organisms

Research line: Impact

Description of impact

Application of the molecular genetic analysis to the differential study of populations of marine species of commercial interest to indentify biological (populational units) and fishing stocks, for a proper the management of the fisheries, and the conservation of the natural resources. Until the moment, this line of research has focused in the study of populations of marine species subjected to a strong fishing pressure, with the aim to identify the number of biological stocks and differentiate them from the units subjected to the fishing pressure (fishing stocks) in order to improve their management. On the other hand, the genetic data obtained can be used in studies of differentiation and cataloging of commercial fish products. The species studied in this line of research include hake, anchovy, bluefin tuna, albacore, swordfish, dolphin fish, bullet tuna, mullet and rose shrimp, among others.
