Study of the molecular and cellular changes iduced by intracranial self stimulation (ICSS), a memory improving treatment

Research line: Impact

Description of impact

Intracranial self-stimulation (ICSS)could serve to improve learning and memory processes in rats, and has been also able to reverse memory deficits caused by aging or brain lesions. We are interested in study how ICSS regulate hippocampal genes in brain areas that have been previously associated to learning and memory processes. We collaborate with the group of Psychobiology of the University of Barcelona (UB), directed by Dr. Ignacio Morgado and experts ICSS and leaning and memory studies. Our results suggest that ICSS may facilitate learning and memory by regulation of multiple signaling pathways in the hippocampus and amygdala that may promote neuroplasticity and neuroprotection.
