Mujeres migrantes en economía sumergida:experiencias de trabajo doméstico y de cuidados en Cataluña

Resum

This research focuses onLatin American migrant womenwithout residence permits in Spain workingin underground economy, specifically in domestic and care work for dependent people. The aim is to understand the experiences of these women within the contexts and characteristics of this type of work and how it affects them. The methodology used involved qualitative interviews (n=14 women), along with interviews with other key informants, such as professional and activists (n=8). The study was carried out in the city of Girona (Spain) during the period 2022-2023. The results reveal relevant contexts around domestic and care work, related to:(1) expectations of the migratory project;(2) working conditions in the country of arrival; (3) work-related violence; and(4) the value of caregivingwork and self-care. From the embodied experiences of women, vulnerable subjectivities emerge, although also the mechanisms and strategies of resistance to the system of oppression they generate in order to survive in their subaltern work
